Darken had been born during the third age as Devin Kearney. He entered the world into a life of wealth and privilege. His father had been a member of the upper aristocracy and just short of being consider apart of the royal family. His mother's identity was something that Darken never knew. She was long gone by the time he started to form memories regarding the world around him. Some claim that she was just a simple peasant girl. Other claim that she claimed that she the king's beloved daughter whom he had to lock away inside a tower due to a mental breakdown that was caused by Devin's father.

Whatever the cause, Devin never knew the woman whom bore him into the world nor did the idea that his father would use his mother long enough to get what he wanted from her didn't surprise him when he became old enough to understand what his father was. His father was simply a user. He was a man that believed that everyone was placed upon the planet for his pleasure, and that is exactly how he used them. No one seemed to mind. His charm drew them in just like flies to honey. Even Devin wasn't immune to his father's manipulative ways.

He was his father's heir. The only child that he officially claimed. Rumors had it that he had other children spread across the lands, but he made no attempt to claim them in any form. As his heir, Devin's father had expectations for his son. His father wanted Devin to become exactly like him so when he finally died his legacy would live on. No, he didn't want his son to be an exact replica of him, but a better version. From an early age his father begun to mold him into his ideal. His father was far from a patient man when it came to his lessons. Some might say that his expectations regarding them were ridiculous.

He would settle for nothing less than perfection even if the task that was set before Devin was a completely foreign one. If Devin failed to perform this task up to his father's standards he would be severally punished. When his father wasn't trying to shape him into his perfect heir he completely and utterly ignored him. Devin quickly learned how to pick up on his father's moods, and made himself vanish whenever his father started to switch between ignoring him and showing interest in his development--much to his father's ire. At first, he hide within their estate but slowly he moved out into the rest of the city until he ended up in the district.

Every city and town across the land had a district. It was what Devin's people called their poorest neighborhood. It was an unsavory place that most high ranking member of society avoided at all cost, but Devin found beauty among the filth. He found honor among the poorest and so called worst of society that didn't exist among the nobles. He became closer to them than any member of his class, and learned from them things he would never have learned if he stayed within his own neighborhood. One of the things he was taught was what it meant to be a true warrior--a man who fought to protect his people instead of fighting for honor and glory.

Another lesson he learned from them was how to hide his powers. They were the first to notice his gifts, and knew exactly what that meant--death. His government had declared that it was illegal for anything supernatural to be found inside their lands, and if anything remotely resembling a supernatural being was found were killed. They had seen what happened to other human society who interacted with supernatural beings and decided that the only way to ensure that their own nation doesn't meet a similar fate was to cut all ties with anything supernatural. Exceptions were, of course, made. If one held a high enough status within society their 'gifts' were pardoned.

It was a few months before his twentieth birthday when his powers were discovered. He wasn't the only one. He had been out with several friends from the district, and they too were found to have special abilities. They were to be executed while Devin would receive the pardon that came from someone of his position. It was not something that he was willing to stand for. Why should he be able to live while they died? They had just as much right to life as everyone else. At first, they wanted nothing to do with what he said, but Devin managed to convince them that allowing them to live might be for the best.

He did it by suggesting that those with special powers should be put into an organization whose sole purpose is to patrol the borders and make sure that nothing supernatural made it inside the kingdom. At this time, the army were the ones who have taken up this task. The idea of freeing them from this responsibility, and giving it to someone who was better suited for it was one they couldn't turn aside. They saw the special powers that those like Devin possessed as an edge against the supernatural, and if they died during the process it wouldn't be any real lose.

The order was officially created. Those who made up its numbers were called hunters--eventually they became known as Elite. Devin was credited with finding this organization, and he was responsible for writing many of the rules that order still follows today. It was him that created the strenuous training program that makes the elites the best warriors within the kingdom. He helped the members of the organization better understand their powers, and develop it beyond anything they thought were possible. He did the same thing to his powers.

He learned that unlike most within the order he had two special abilities. The first was the was the ability to create illusions inside someone's mind. He could make them see, smell, feel, hear and believe whatever he wanted. He learned how to use this powers on multiple people. He could even take control of them, and turn them into his puppets. His other powers was the ability to steal--well borrow---the abilities of others. At first, he thought this power was a nullifying one. He used it, and the other person was unable to access their own ability. He later learned that he was actually swiping the power from them, and adding to his own arsenal because even after he returned a power he remembered how to use it. Devin learned how to keep the powers he swiped from returning to their original owners, or how not to steal them period.

The years drifted by and Devin became a living legend among his people. His skill as a warrior became renown all across the land. Stories of his prowess is told even in the modern day. He became the example every warrior within the kingdom inspired to be like. Many claimed that he was actually a god, which god differ from region to region, but most claimed that he was the god of war. These stories were being told even while he was still apart of the order. They didn't stay within his kingdom, but spread all across the planet into other lands until they found their way into the ears of a dragon named Kiara.

She was a black dragon, and the first black dragon to come into being. Kiara was curious by these stories, and decided to go to this human kingdom to see this great warrior with her own eyes. The last thing she expect was to fall in love, but that was exactly what she did. Devin and Kiara were immediately drawn to each other. Devin found he was unable to kill her in spite knowing what she was. He denied his feelings for her at first, refusing to admit that he was in love with a supernatural being, but eventually acknowledge the truth as he spent more time with her. She became a constant companion.

Kiara wasn't the only supernatural being that took interest in Devin. A Phoenix, also, showed interest within him. Her interest, however, might have came from the fact that Kiara liked him. The Phoenix and dragon were rivals, and often fought over many things. Devin just became another thing that they fought over. At first, it was done in the typical ways two females might fight over the affection of a male. However, they begun to encourage him to use his power swiping abilities in order to give him the abilities associated with their species until he had every last one--including the ability to take on a dragon and phoenix form--within his arsenal.

Taking all these different abilities changed him. Made him into a supernatural being, but what exactly he doesn't know. Is he a dragon? Is he a phoenix? A hybrid of the two? Or something completely different? The only thing he knows is he no longer human, and that all this power exchanging have opened up a hunger within him. It was around this time that he realized that his ability to steal others powers came with a price. The more powers he took the more he wanted. He left the order behind in order to go out into the world, and satisfy this hunger.

Both the dragon and phoenix followed after him, and stuck by his side even after it became clear that along with the price of an endless hunger Devin was also being driven insane. The more he gave into his hungry the less of his sanity he maintained. He felt himself slipping day by day, and feared what he would become if he surrendered completely to the madness. A man obsessed with power, who would do anything to achieve it--regardless of the price. He knew that he had to get the dragon and phoenix away from him.

He drove the phoenix away, but when he turned to do the same to the dragon she stubbornly refused to do the same. She vowed to stay beside him, claiming that even if he did consume her completely in his insanity that it would be a much preferable fate than being banished from his side. He was her mate. Her other half. The father of her child. The last part gave him pause, and it was within that moment that she revealed to him that she was with child. He knew that he should still drive her away--not just for her sake, but for their unborn child, as well. He asked her to marry him instead, and she agreed.

Devin realized that something about his growing insanity had to be done. It was a problem that wasn't going to disappear just by ignoring it. He brained storm possible solutions for awhile until what he believed was the solution hit him. He thought that if he divided his soul into three parts that it would lessen the insanity, or even return him to a completely normal mental state. After debating it over for a few days, Devin decided to go through with this plan. He ripped his soul into three parts. One piece he kept for himself.

He took the other two pieces, and created two new beings. He didn't create an entire new species. Instead, the beings he created were molded after two species he already knew, or rather two females he knew. He modeled them after the black dragon and the white phoenix. Through, his black dragon and white phoenix differ from the original. This didn't surprise him. He had expected as much. In fact, he expected them both to be male like him instead of females like those they were modeled after, but only the black dragon was male. When he spoke his confusion over this to Kiara, she explained this idea of balance that she heard from another race called witches.

They believe in this idea of a masculine and feminine force. They believe that these two forces balance each other, and wherever a masculine force exist so does a feminine one. They complete each other, and are as much apart of each other as his own arm is apart of him. When he split his soul into thirds he subconsciously maintained this idea by making one of them female and the other male. He decided that it didn't matter. What was important was if it achieved his goal, and it did. His mind was free from the insanity, but he feared that it was only a temporary fix. He could feel it lurking beneath the surface, and knew that it was a matter of time before it returns. It was for this reason that he tasked the white phoenix and the black dragon with protecting his wife, and new born son, whom Kiara had just given birth to.

Aside from giving the black dragon and white phoenix the abilities associated with their species, Devin gave each of them one of his original abilities. He gave the white phoenix his illusion abilities while granting the black dragon his power stealing abilities. There was a piece of him that believed he should have kept that ability for himself. It was very possible that the black dragon might end up suffering the same affliction as him, but he believed that this was the only way to alleviate his insanity. His belief might have been correct, or his insanity might have lessen due to the simple fact he divided his soul into three parts. It is impossible to tell.

His fears eventually came true. The insanity he believed was just lurking beneath the surface waiting to return did just that. He tried to suppress it, but slowly day by day he felt himself slipping away. What caused him to go over the edge wasn't his power, but from his wife betraying him, at least this is what he thought. The truth was he was made to believe that she betrayed him. Her people didn't like her relationship with him and sought to end it--even if that meant convincing him to kill her. They made him believe that she never loved him, that she was only using him as a part of a twisted game. Worse yet, they made him believe that she had killed their son and replaced him with something else--a monster--because she hated him that much, and it was the only way to keep control over him.

Ignoring her protest to the contrary, he killed her and turned to put an end to the thing he had loved as his son these last few years, but before he could actually kill his son the black dragon and white phoenix stepped in. They fought him, and after a very difficult battle managed to seal him away. Both the black dragon and white phoenix suffered grave wounds from the battle, and only managed to cling onto life long enough to bring Devin's son to the witches, where they believed he would be safe, before dying.

He remained sealed for centuries until the currant king of his birth land freed him. The king knew whom Devin was, but Devin had no intention of returning to his role as the dark warrior--the greatest elite to ever live, or so this is how people think of him according to the king. He thought about making the king forget all about him and walking away. He had no desire of returning to his people as the dark warrior, but before he could put this plan into action the king gave him an offer he couldn't refuse.

He had just married the most awful woman. It was a political arrangement, and one his parents set up long before their death. He honored his parents wishes by marrying her, but he didn't love her. He didn't love any woman. He preferred the company of males, but this woman was a particularly foul creature whose ambitions for power far exceeded her beauty. He might have enjoyed being married to her, at least as far as a man with his preference could, if it wasn't for the fact he found her so despicable. He knew he saw his throne as a chance to gain more power, but he wanted to make sure that she never achieve that goal. He wanted to sleep with her enough to consummate their marriage and gain his heir. This was where Devin came in.

He could make everyone--including the queen--believe she have gotten pregnant. He could keep this illusion all the way up until she gives birth and here the king would whisk the child off elsewhere to be raised away from his mother's influence. The child would remain in this secret location until he came of age, and then he would be introduced to the court. Devin would be this child. The king would even name him Devin. It was an extremely popular name, and wouldn't seem out of place for him to do such a thing. Devin agreed to help the king out in this manner, but declined him naming his son Devin. He wanted to distance himself as much as possible from his old identity. Instead, he picked the name Darken.Once the agreement was struck, Devin put the plan into action and it went without a hitch. No one was aware of the truth.

While Darken was supposedly away, the king taught him about the world and the changes that occurred since he had been sealed away. The order still exist, and while it maintained many of his original ideas there were some notable changes. One being the idea that females couldn't be warriors. In Darken's days male and female stood side by side on the field of battle, but now females born with special abilities were used as nothing more than breeding stocks for more elites. Another change was how an elite was allowed to develop their powers. They were no longer allowed to shape and mold it in the same manner that was allowed when he first created the order. The powers must maintain a strict defensive purpose only, and any development that made it possible to use as an offensive; made the user too supernatural and they must be killed if that occurs.

Casting aside his identity as Devin Kearney, Darken Lamar made his appearance at court when the time eventually came. He allowed himself to be absorbed completely into his role as crown prince. He knew that his mother and father had not slept with each other since his birth, and that any siblings he had were his half siblings. He also knew that his mother would have shaped these children according to her own desire, and in such a way that would further her own goals. She reminds him of his own biological father in that regard. The man might even be her ancestor. He finds that he doesn't like most of his half-siblings. There are a couple he actually likes. One of them being a sister named Devaki, whom he recognized as the white phoenix reborn. He doesn't tell her this nor does he tell her that he realizes that she is the elite Devak when she decides to take on that identity and join the order as an elite warrior.

He found the black dragon after he found the white phoenix, but before she disguises herself as a male. He is a peasant-born male named Alaric, who everyone believes is the dark warrior reborn. A fact that amuses Darken, because in a way he is but he isn't. Just in the same manner that Devaki is but isn't the dark warrior reborn. They, like the witches' masculine and feminine concepts, are as much a part of him as his own heart. They have a connection that most people are incapable of understanding. He decided to patron Alaric, and would have done the same for his sister, but she decided that she wanted to patron herself. Naturally, he has grown rather close to Alaric over the years he had been his patron. Darken has even found himself drawn to Alaric younger sister---Isolda and he has finally got her to agree to marry him.

Many of his secrets had reveled themselves. Both Alaric and Devaki know the truth of whom they are, and Darken identity as Devin is no longer as much of a secret as it once was. The people are still unaware of this truth, but there are a few other than Darken whom is aware of it. He knows eventually the world will come to know whom he is, and he will cross that bridge when it comes upon it, but for the moment he will focus upon help his country transition to the change that is befalling it as well as help his wife to be adapt to her role as fairy queen.
